In 19th Century America, a couple of newspapers featured stories about flying crocodiles. One suspects these were some of the newspaper hoaxes that tended to proliferate in those days. Certainly, the animals described seem most unlikely from a physiological point of view. There is the possibility, I suppose, that they represent unknown flying reptiles discerned in the distance. One report said that in 1882 lumberjacks in California looked upwards to see a flying crocodile with three pairs of legs and six of wings. (Don't they call lumberjacks 'tree fellers' in California anyway?). In 1891 two similar creatures were reported in Fresno. What are we to make of these? I know of no other such reports.
