At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

SOMEWHERE IN THE OKEFENOKEE

Trees in Okefenokee Swamp
The Okefenokee Swamp lies in Georgia and Florida and many legends have been told about it.  One of these is that a humanoid, 13' in height, was once killed there.  However, it is another legend on which I intend to focus today: that of the Daughters of the Sun.

The story goes that these are beauteous maidens who live somwhere in the swamp in a place called Lost Paradise.  Once it is said some white men went into the swamp, so Creek legend tells us. They became dizzy and overtired and collapsed, but the beauteous maidens turned up and tended them.  When they had recovered, a cloud of smoke enveloped them, taking them away.  But so taken had they become with the Daughters of the Sun thatthey returned to the swamp and were seen no more.

Earlier the Spaniards are said to have sought the Daughters of the Sun, but they sought them fruitlessly.  If the Indians knew where they dwelt, they weren't telling them.
